De ce fait, pour innover, il ne reste plus qu’à cette suite des tubes moins connus du quatuor star Andante Andante, Fernando, My Love my Life… Pour palier ce manque de hits, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again réutilise certaines chansons phares déjà entonnées dans le premier opus comme Super Trouper, Mamma Mia ou Dancing Queen. La comparaison avec le film de 2008 est alors trop à la défaveur de ce nouveau long métrage qui manque d’entrain. Cependant, la promesse autour d’une telle comédie musicale est plutôt un moment de joie où l’on peut danser et s’amuser plutôt qu’une vague de tristesse mélancolique. En cela, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again tombe trop dans le mélo d’un film d’adolescent à la High School Musical. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again n’est pas non plus rattrapé par son scénario. Alors que le premier opus arrivait à reconstituer une histoire autour des chansons, on a l’impression avec ce prequel que les tubes sont entassés de façon opportuniste pour les faire rentrer de force dans l’intrigue. En conséquence, les situations sont poussives et ubuesques comme le moment où le personnage de Cher rencontre celui d’Andy Garcia avant de basculer sur le titre Fernando. De plus, l’intrigue ne suit pas forcément la trame du premier film. En effet, dans le journal de Donna dans Mamma Mia !, il était écrit que celle-ci rencontrait Harry Colin Firth en dernier. Or, dans Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, le jeune homme est le premier sur qui la future maman tombe.
